Steel Type and Rusting Each metal piece arrives sanded, oil-free, and ready to paint. Both carbon and Corten steel will rust quickly, espeically when placed outside. By comparison, Corten steel (or weathering steel) is known for its beautiful and protective patina. In fact, Corten Steel rust provides a protective layer to prevent further corrosion. What You’ll Need (Not Included): Retaining wall blocks (available at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or garden centers). Blocks should be 12″ W x 4″ H x 7″ D and can cost about $2 each. Pro Tip: Tap off the back lip with a hammer to ensure a flat fit. Our instruction video explains this step. Essential tools: Phillips screwdriver, hammer, crescent wrench (or 7/16 wrench). How to use the kit: Painting is optional but do so before assembly. For tips and tricks, see our painting video. Steps: Gather retaining wall blocks and remove the back lip. Safety Tip: Please use personal protective gear like eye protection and gloves. Assemble the smokeless fire pit ring with two 7/16 wrenches. Using the fire pit ring as a template, place blocks and vent blocks (spaced as evenly as possible) on the first row of the hardscape ring. For optimal airflow: A 1/2″ to 1″ gap should be between the retaining wall blocks and the metal fire pit ring insert. Stack additional rows of blocks for a total of four rows. Insert the metal smokeless fire pit ring insert and ensure it sits flush on the ground and the lip is flush with the top blocks. Optional: Finish the hardscape fire ring with a cap.
