Ironbridge in Thirteen — Jenny Mason-GunningIronbridge in Thirteen is a 13-colour lino reduction print capturing the structure and presence of the iconic Iron Bridge through layered colour and careful registration.Reduction printing is both deliberate and irreversible. Each colour is printed from the same block, carved away in stages. Once an area is cut, it cannot be reprinted. The image is built progressively — layer upon layer — until nothing remains of the original surface. The process demands planning, patience, and trust in the sequence.In this work, thirteen separate colour layers create depth, atmosphere, and structural clarity. The bridge emerges gradually through shifting tonal planes, with colour used not simply descriptively, but architecturally. Each layer contributes to the overall rhythm of the composition, balancing strength and subtlety.Ironbridge itself carries historical and industrial significance — a structure that represents innovation and endurance. Through the reduction method, that sense of engineering and construction is echoed in the making of the print. The image is constructed through removal, revealing form through subtraction.As with all lino reductions, the edition is strictly limited. Once complete, the block is fully carved and cannot produce further prints. Only around ten prints now remain available from this edition.Ironbridge in Thirteen stands as both image and process — a layered study of structure, colour, and permanence created through one of printmaking’s most demanding techniques.
